October 2012

Not a huge amount to look forward to this month, especially new music, but no doubt more wil! emerge over the coming couple of weeks. Nice to see something finally being done with the Cockney Rebel albums, however. Surely The Psychomodo rates among the very best albums of the 1970s?

24/9 - Ringo Deathstarr - Mauve (Club AC30)

Missed this one last month. The second album proper from the best named band on the planet. Shoegazy dreamscapes from the admirable Texicans.

1/10 - The Velvet Undergound & Nico - Same (Polydor)

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the The Velvet Underground & Nico, a special edition box set has been put together, featuring remastered versions of the album and previously unreleased material.

• Stereo and mono versions remastered from the original tapes
• Previously unreleased recordings of the band’s rehearsals in Warhol’s Factory
• Rare April 1966 Scepter Studios recordings
• Previously unavailable November ’66 live concert
• Nico’s Chelsea Girl, an album released in October 1967
• An 88-page booklet featuring a new essay by band biographer Richie Unterberger

The deluxe version of the album from 2006 was a pig's ear of a release with the sound distorting at even minimal levels. Hopefully a better job has been made of this version.

1/10 - AR Kane - Complete Singles Collection (1 Little Indian)

Once upon a time the world was at their feet. Positively drooling for this double CD release featuring all of the band's single and EP takes in one place for the first time. Where did it go wrong?

1/10 - Bob Mould - Silver Age (Demon)

"Another aggressive pop record," states Mr Mould, who appears to have emerged fighting after having immersed himself in working on the recent impressive Sugar reissues. Good news all round.

1/10 - Muse - The 2nd Law (Warner Brothers)

Will Muse actually achieve greatness before they disappear up their own arses? The sixth studio album from the boys, and the first release since 2009's Resistance. A deluxe edition also includes a bonus DVD documenting how the album was made. Possibly in a recording studio?

8/10 - Savages - I Am Here (Pop Noire)

The second release from the best new band in Britain (sorry NME), a twelve inch live single recorded at recent dates in Nottingham and Bristol. We're a bit disappointed we get 'Husbands' again, but there are three previously unreleased tracks to enjoy, namely 'City’s Full', 'Give Me A Gun' and 'I Am Here'. We love this band. The digital download was available 1/10 if that's your thing.

8/10 - The Who - Live In Texas (Eagle)

DVD filmed at The Summit in Houston, Texas, on 20th November 1975, capturing a typically incendiary live performance by The Who at the start of the US leg of their tour in support of The Who By Numbers album which had been released earlier that year. It's probably better than that album was.

23/10 - The Doors - Live At The Bowl (Eagle)

On 5th July 1968 The Doors took to the stage of the Hollywood Bowl, performing on the back of the release of their third album Waiting For The Sun and the single 'Hello, I Love You'. Now for the first time the original footage has been digitally remastered to present the complete show with two previously lost tracks returned to the running order. The sound has been newly remixed from the original tapes by regular producer Bruce Botnick. Available on CD, vinyl and DVD.

29/10 - Cockney Rebel - Cavaliers (EMI)

Oh yes, at last! A 4CD box set from the original Cockney Rebel (no guitarist!) and all of their output from 1973-74. This includes remastered versions of The Human Menagerie and the incredible The Psychomodo with the addition of the missing singles (including 'Judy Teen'), a CD of early versions and demos, and a further CD of tracks from Peel Sessions, BBC In Concert and The Old Grey Whistle Test. If you don't want this, book an appointment with your doctor.
